A site for low sodium diet information
This is a place where we “losodes” can share our experiences and discoveries about products and recipes that help maintain our health.
Your comments will contribute much of the content, so please add to every article you can.
All items on this blog may be re-published with credit to Losode and in case of signed articles also to the author.
This site promises to be a great resource. I don’t need to watch my sodium (yet) but I have friends that do. I’m going to tell them about this site and contribute any brands and products I happen to come across while shopping.
Ben, you mentioned that your favourite local Thai restaurant had offered to serve you low sodium meals whenever you visited. Since eating out can present a problem for “losodes”, perhaps you’d like to give the restaurant a plug. I know it’s in the Toronto Annex on the north side of Bloor just west of Spadina. Do you know the name of the place?
Also, this example is a reminder that some restauranteurs will make an effort to accommodate low sodium dieters, if they are asked politely.
Bill: the restaurant is Real Thai located at 350 Bloor St. W.
All their dishes are MSG-free. My wife and I have been frequent visitors since it opened. Since most Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese and South Asian dishes are proscribed due to their salt content and also, where used, MSG I asked one of the proprietors whether low salt dishes could be made available. I was told that where possible certain dishes, such as stir fries, could be prepared without salty ingredients.
Just stopped by for a visit. Nice job!
Thanks for this.
This site will be a very good resource, especially for us, Asians, who have almost no fear on our high sodium intake.
Ben, reading through your reasons for creating this website, I was reminded of a story my friend Leonard told me around the holidays in 2006 — after chancing upon him and his family at a shopping mall.
He said he almost died, went comatose for awhile, all as a result of his fondness for those high-sodium content packed instant noodles imported from Asia — that he used to take with him to work, pour water and put in the microwave during his breaktime from work.
At home, we have a low sodium diet, too, considering that my wife and son (the latter a certified fitness instructor and certified nutritionist, too) are so concious on these things.
During the early years when my wife started ourselves on this, I used to complain about the flat taste of our food on the table, but as I get used to it, eating out started to become a problem, because of high salt content in the food.
Great initiative, Ben!
Wow! Canadians really need to watch their sodium levels, now that the TV news reveals how much more salt is being dumped into our prepared foods, compared with the same brands in other countries. This is SHOCKING!
